Abstract
Among the stories that contain some allegorical verses (Mutashabihat) in the Holy Quran is the story of Benjamin being confined by Prophet Yusuf (AS), which is mentioned in the 69th to 79th verses of Surah Yusuf. The ambiguities in these verses, which can be resolved by referring to the decisive verses (Muhkamat) are: the accusation of theft against apparently innocent people in public by a prophet and his resort to lie in order to implement his plan. The findings of the research, based on the interpretations of the Two Sects (Sunni and Shia) and some subtle precisions of the commentators, show that the prophet Yusuf (AS) did not make any accusations against his brothers in this case, did not slander them, and did not tell any lies in this regard. The meaning of "Innakum la’Sariqoun" [You indeed are thieves] (Yusuf/70) is their theft of Yusuf from his father during his childhood, which his brothers had really done; so the brothers of Yusuf were thieves and it was necessary to disgrace them in public. Almighty God also implemented a plan through Yusuf (AS) to bring about the necessary punishment for his brothers. The method to achieve the wanted result in this paper is a comparative study among different interpretations from which has been extracted the material that supports the infallibility of the Prophets, that was obtained through analysis and description.
