Abstract
The philosophical hermeneutic approach in anthropology, emphasizing the historicity and fluidity of human understanding, regards the Prophet (PBUH) and the Qur’an as products of Arab culture and history, thereby challenging the Qur’an’s sanctity and universality. This perspective, advanced by certain religious neo-thinkers, confines the Qur’an to its historical context and portrays it as shaped by the personality of the Prophet (PBUH). The purpose of this study is to critically examine the foundational assumption of human historicity and its implications for the alleged historicity of the Qur’an. Drawing upon the Islamic intellectual framework, this article demonstrates that human beings possess trans-historical capacities, which are most perfectly embodied in the person of the Prophet (PBUH). The necessity of this research arises from the fact that historicist perspectives may lead to relativism and the undermining of religious doctrines. Employing a library-based, descriptive-analytical methodology, this paper investigates the Islamic view of human nature and its trans-historical capacities, particularly as manifested in the Prophet (PBUH) and the Noble Qur’an. By critiquing the historicist interpretation of humanity and sacred texts, and grounding its argument in Islamic principles, this article affirms the trans-historical nature of human beings, the Prophet (PBUH), and the Holy Qur’an. Evidence supporting this claim includes humanity’s innate yearning for eternity, the evolutionary trajectory of human development, Mulla Sadra’s theory of substantial motion, the Prophet’s (PBUH) knowledge of the unseen, and the Qur’an’s scientific miracles.
